Хочу показать вам результат работы, которая забрала много времени и нервов. Работа была командная, но при презентации мне пришлось вкалывать в одиночку. Заняла второе место. Итак. (всё на английском, так уж там положено)
Слайд 1. Graffiti as an international language of youth subculture.
Слайд 2. Amazing, aren’t they? Do you really believe that they are just an act of vandalism? If yes, we’ll try to convince you that it’s highly debatable.
Слайд 3.The goal of our project is to study graffiti in order to find out whether it is an example of anti-social behavior, a kind of vandalism, or a specific youth language.
Слайд 4.The term graffiti referred to the inscriptions, figure drawings, etc., found on the walls of ancient sepulchers or ruins, as in the Catacombs of Rome or at Pompeii. Usage of the word has evolved to include any graphics applied to surfaces in a manner that constitutes vandalism.
Слайд5.Our hypothesis is that graffiti is a unique language, which helps modern youngsters to make their feelings and ideas clear to other people all over the world.
Слайд 6. During the project we tried to work out the circumstances under which graffiti is considered to be an international language of youth subculture.
Слайд 7. Definitions. We started with the definition of the word “language”.
1) According to Devil’s dictionary, a language is a systematic means of communicating by the use of sounds or conventional symbols.
2) According to Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English a language is a system of communication by written or spoken words, which is used by the people of a particular area.
3) According to MacMillan English Dictionary a language is signs, symbols, sounds and other methods of communicating information, feelings or ideas.
Early days. Nowadays many people believe that graffiti started in the middle of the twentieth century. However, according to scientific research the earliest forms of graffiti date back to 30,000 BC in the form of prehistoric cave paintings and pictographs using tools such as animal bones and pigments. These illustrations were often placed in ceremonial and sacred locations inside the caves. The images drawn on the walls showed scenes of animal wildlife and hunting expeditions in most circumstances. We can consider such type of graffiti to be an attempt to communicate information about the tribe and the surroundings.
Further development. The only known source of the Safaitic language, a form of proto-Arabic, is from graffiti: inscriptions scratched on to the surface of rocks and boulders in the predominantly basalt desert of southern Syria, eastern Jordan and northern Saudi Arabia. Safaitic dates from the 1st century BC to the 4th century AD.
Nowadays. In America around the late 1960s, graffiti was used as a form of expression by political activists, and also by gangs such as the Savage Skulls, La Familia, and Savage Nomads to mark territory and express their identities.
So, we see that graffiti has certain features to be thought of as a specific language.
Слайд 8. According to our survey, 94 percent of young people are sure that graffiti is a language, 65 percent of people older than 40 years agree that graffiti is a language and 52 percent of people from 25 to 40 years say that graffiti is a language. On average 70 percent of people interviewed in Tambov share the idea that graffiti is a kind of language.
Слайд 9. Most youngsters from other countries have a similar view on graffiti, for example:
“Graffiti is great! It allows young people to express their feelings without getting into trouble”, - says a thirteen-year-old teenager Catherine from the UK.
“I think that graffiti lets me paint my feelings”, - says a sixteen-year-old teenager Tom from the UK.
“The only reason some people call it vandalism is because we paint on public things – but we have nowhere else to express our talent”, - says a fourteen-year-old teenager John from the USA.
Слайд 10. In the early 1980s, there was a real craze for graffiti but the trend was short-lived – until the arrival of hip-hop music in the late 80s. In her book, Subway Art, Martha Cooper says: “Graffiti came back with hip-hop music and people are now appreciating it for its style, which they couldn’t back then, because they couldn’t get beyond the vandalism thing.”
So, graffiti is one of the four main elements of hip-hop culture (along with rapping, DJing and break dancing). The relationship between graffiti and hip hop culture arises both from early graffiti artists practicing other aspects of hip hop, and its being practiced in areas where other elements of hip hop were evolving as art forms. Nevertheless, graffiti has universal appeal to lots of teenagers, who are not particularly keen on hip-hop, because graffiti has already become more than a part of hip-hop culture as it has its own language for communication between those who are involved in the process. For example,
Burn means to beat a competitor with a style.
Burning means any work having not been removed. They say, "That piece is still burning on main street."
Dress-up means to completely write all over a specific area like a door-way, wall or window that is untouched.
So, we see that graffiti is a language of youth subculture.
Слайд 11. Modern graffiti comes from the USA, but in the course of time due to the process of globalization it has become an international phenomenon. The evidence of it is the fact that many writers are fairly known all over the world.
Слайд 12. For example, Banksy is one of the world's most notorious and popular street artists who continues to remain faceless in today's society. He is known for his political, anti-war stencil art mainly in Bristol, England but his work can be seen anywhere from Los Angeles to Palestine. Much of Banksy's artwork can be seen around the streets of London and surrounding suburbs, though he has painted pictures around the world, including the Middle East, where he has painted on Israel's controversial West Bank barrier with satirical images of life on the other side.
Слайд 13. Nowadays teams of graffiti writers can be found in most countries, including Russia. 2009 was declared as The Year of Youth. The government of Tambov region decided to hold a graffiti competition devoted to it. The local authorities provided a wall near the supermarket “Magnit”. The topic of the competition was “My town, my year”. Competitors tried to express their ideas and feelings through graffiti.
Here you can see the best works and try to understand their message.
Слайд 14.Today you get graffiti in places, where you wouldn’t expect to – in advertisements, on clothes, on toys and even on the Wall Street Journal’s official website! Companies are starting to realize the appeal of graffiti in advertizing, because it is a kind of language, which can bring youngsters round to an advertised message.
So we see that graffiti is an international language of youth subculture.
Слайд 15. Finally, a commonly held view that graffiti is an example of anti-social behavior, illegal and punishable by fines is strongly debatable. Collected and analyzed data proves that graffiti is a very important part of youth subculture and under certain circumstances it can become a language which will help to develop mutual understanding not only between youngsters of different countries but also between generations.
1. Firstly, graffiti should be made legal, because according to our survey, on average 71 percent of interviewees agree with this idea providing the graffiti is written in particular places.
2. Secondly, on average 55 percent of interviewees are sure that graffiti can help people understand each other better, if people see it not as an act of vandalism but as a way to communicate ideas and feelings.
3. Finally, if we consider graffiti to be an international youth language, it should be taught as any other language. At least there could be special popular courses on graffiti for anyone who is interested.
Слайд 16. To sum up, graffiti can serve as an international language of youth subculture, which helps young people to express their feelings and ideas.
